Student Deposit Protection through Unipol, A Role Model for Corporate Landlords

The partnership between Unipol, the national charity that works to improve training, standards and professionalism in student housing, and the Tenancy Deposit Scheme, TDS, is to continue for a second year. This follows a successful launch last Christmas and acceptance by Unipol landlords of this bespoke student deposit protection scheme operating in Leeds, Bradford and Nottingham. It is believed that this protective link should become a role model for all corporate landlords throughout the country.

The success of the first year has led Liz Hodgen, Deputy Chief Executive of Unipol to predict, “As the year has been so successful, we can confidently expect further growth in the new letting year.

“Students renting accommodation from Unipol-accredited landlords have peace of mind that their property is safe, the landlord operates good business practices and they can know that their deposit money is safeguarded. In the event of a dispute there is free access to Alternative Dispute Resolution. This can be fast-tracked through Unipol,” she added.

In addition to gaining access to the Tenancy Deposit Scheme at very competitive rates, Unipol landlords get advice on many aspects of the student lettings market, use of a model tenancy generator and are able to advertise on a heavily used website.

Said Steve Harriott, Chief Executive of the Tenancy Deposit Scheme, “Together with Unipol, we have established a successful role model for protecting deposits for student lettings. This model should be rolled out across the corporate landlord sector as demand for rented accommodation soars and the need for deposit protection grows.”
